GS1-compliant 2D Barcodes via the Bitly API
This feature is available with some paid plans
The Bitly API can be used to create 2D Barcodes. These are QR Codes that can be used much like a traditional barcode, while being able to store and communicate much more information.
Our 2D Barcodes are compliant with GS1 standards, the most widely-used supply chain standards in the world. They can store a Global Trade Identification Number (GTIN) so that a product can be scanned at checkout, as well as store other customer-facing information like expiration dates, sourcing information, and more.
2D Barcodes use the same API endpoint as our other QR Codes.
Learn more:
Bitly QR Codes API endpoint
There's a new version of our API endpoint for QR Codes. This new endpoint has more functionality, allowing you to create QR Codes without associated links, create GS1-compliant 2D Barcodes, and more.
It's also possible to make very simple requests to the new endpoint. When you visit our site for developers to get more information about the endpoint, we have sample requests on the right side of the screen. From the dropdown in the Create QR Code section, select Minimal to view an example of a simple one.
If you currently use the Bitly API to create, edit, or retrieve QR Codes, you're likely using the previous version of this endpoint. Your requests to the previous endpoint continue to work, but moving to the new version will make more functionality available to you.
