Why are there ads on my link?
The links you’re using are part of an older Free Short Link tool that we’ve since discontinued to improve security. Bitly now requires all users to create an account.
What you are seeing is a new update that includes a preview of the link destination and an advertisement.
Links created without a Bitly account cannot be managed, redirected, or otherwise customized. Ads will remain on links of this type unless they are recreated in a paid Bitly account.
What can I do to remove ads on my link?
To remove ads on this type of link, you can recreate the link in a Bitly paid account. To do this, follow the steps below.
- Create a free Bitly account here.
- Upgrade to a paid plan (starting at $8/month) for an ad-free experience and additional features.
- Once you’ve created your account, create a new link to the same destination using your account tools.
- Last step, replace your old anonymous link with your new one wherever it’s being used.
Can I edit my link?
To redirect your link or customize your experience, here’s what you can do:
- Create a Bitly account here. Free accounts let you manage and edit your links, but they still include ads. Paid plans (starting at $8/month) offer an ad-free experience and additional customization options.
- Generate a new link: Use your Bitly account to create a link pointing to the same destination as your old one.
- Replace your old link: Update any content with the new link to ensure seamless redirection.
How do I redirect my link?
To redirect your link or customize your experience, you will need to create a Bitly account. Links cannot be redirected using a Free account, upgrade to a paid plan here.
I already have a Bitly account, how do I move my anonymous link to this account?
Here’s how you can move your anonymous link to your account:
- Create a new link: Log into your Bitly account and create a new link pointing to the same destination as your anonymous link. This will give you full control over the link and its settings.
- Replace the old link: Update your existing content (e.g., websites, emails, or social posts) with your new link to ensure a smooth transition.
If you’re on a free plan, please note that ads will still appear with your links. For an ad-free experience and additional customization options, you can upgrade to a paid plan starting at $8/month.
What will happen if I continue using my link(s) without a Bitly account?
If you continue using your link(s) without creating a Bitly account, the following will happen:
- Your links will still work, but they will display a preview of the destination along with advertisements.
- You won’t be able to edit, track, or manage these links without having a Bitly account.
To gain full control over your links and access additional features, you can create a Bitly account here and generate new links for your destinations. Free accounts will still include ads, but upgrading to a paid plan removes them and unlocks even more tools.
If I upgrade to a paid account, can I transfer my anonymous link into it?
Upgrading to a paid Bitly account will remove the link preview and ads from new links you create, but your old links cannot be transferred into an account or upgraded.
To redirect your anonymous link and take full control, here’s what you can do:
- Create a Bitly account here. Free accounts let you manage and edit your links, but they still include ads. Paid plans (starting at $8/month) offer an ad-free experience and additional customization options.
- Generate a new link: Use your Bitly account to create a link pointing to the same destination as your old one.
- Replace your old link: Update any content with the new link to ensure seamless redirection.
This updated process gives you full control over your links moving forward. We understand this may require a bit of adjustment, but it’s designed to offer you more flexibility and security.
Why can’t I claim/own my link?
At this time, Bitly doesn’t have the ability to let users claim or own links that were created anonymously. We understand this might be disappointing, and we’re here to help you find the best alternative solution.
You can still take control of your links by creating a Bitly account here and generating new links for your destinations. This allows you to edit, track, and customize your links. You can do so for free as well. Please note the free plan will include ads. For an ad-free experience and additional features, you can upgrade to a paid plan starting at $8/month.
