You can update your Bitly Page URL without breaking the old link—traffic automatically redirects to your new URL. You can change your Page URL once per month, with one active redirect allowed at a time.
This article explains how to change your Page URL, view redirect history, and manage your redirects.
- You must have an existing Bitly Page.
- You can only redirect one Page URL per month.
- Only one active redirect is allowed per Page at a time.
How to Change Your Page URL
When you change your Page URL, the old URL automatically forwards all traffic to the new one. This means your audience can still find your Page even if they have the old link saved.
To update your Page URL:
- Log in to your Bitly account.
- Click Pages in the left sidebar.
- Click Edit on your Bitly Page. If you have multiple pages, be sure to select the correct one.
- Click on the three-dot menu at the top.
- Select Page settings from the drop down.
- Click Edit.
- Make edits to the back-half and click Save.
The updated link will appear at the top of the Page editor. You can also change the URL from the Pages list view using the same three-dot menu.
How to View Your Redirect History
You can see which previous URLs are redirecting to your current Page and manage those redirects.
To view your redirect history:
- Log in to your Bitly account.
- Click Pages in the left sidebar.
- Click Edit on your Bitly Page. If you have multiple pages, be sure to select the correct one.
- Click on the three-dot menu at the top.
- Select Redirects from the drop down.
A window will show any prior URLs that are actively redirecting to this Page.
How to Remove a Redirect
If you need to make a new redirect but have already used your monthly change, you can remove your existing redirect first.
To remove an active redirect:
- Open the Redirects window (see steps above).
- Click the trash can icon next to the redirect you want to remove.
- Click Confirm when asked to verify the deletion.
Warning: Once you remove a redirect, the old URL will no longer forward traffic to this Page. Anyone using that old link won't reach your Page anymore.
Understanding Redirect Limits
To maintain system stability, Bitly Pages has these redirect safeguards:
- Monthly limit: You can change a Page URL once per month.
- One redirect at a time: Each Page can have only one active redirect.
- Alert system: If you've reached your limit, you'll see a message with the option to remove your existing redirect.
How Redirects Work with Your Metrics
When you change your Page URL, all your analytics and metrics stay with the Page—they don't reset or move to the old URL.
This means:
- Your total views and engagement data remain intact
- Historical analytics show the complete performance history
- The new URL continues accumulating metrics from both old and new traffic
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose my metrics if I change my Page URL?
No. Metrics stay with the Page, not the URL. Your analytics remain intact when you change your Page URL.
What happens to the old URL after I change it?
It automatically forwards all traffic to the new URL. Anyone who visits the old link will be redirected to your updated Page.
Can I redirect my Page to an external website?
No. Redirects only work within Bitly Pages—you can only redirect from one Bitly Page URL to another Bitly Page URL.
Can I reuse a URL after removing a redirect?
Yes, but only within your original workspace. Once you remove a redirect and free up a URL, you can use it for a new Page in the same workspace.
How many times can I change my Page URL?
You can change your Page URL once per month. Each Page can have only one active redirect at a time. If you need to make another change within the same month, you'll need to remove your current redirect first.
What happens if I remove a redirect?
The old URL will stop forwarding to your Page. Anyone who tries to visit that old URL won't reach your Page anymore.
Tip: All changes you make to your Bitly Page are saved as a draft. If you leave the Page editor, you won't lose your changes.
