What is a URL?

A URL is also sometimes referred to as a link. You enter a URL into your web browser to go to a certain destination on the web.

For example, the URL to go to our website is http://bitly.com/

Some URLs are a very long string of letters and characters. They can be difficult to paste in tweet on twitter or they don't look nice in an email. Bitly allows you to create 'shortlinks' which are exactly what they sound like.

Instead of having this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_resource_locator

You can have this shortlink:

http://bit.ly/QbuZkn

If you have an account on Bitly you can create a shortlink by pasting your URL into the 'paste a link here' box located in the top right corner of your browser next to the puffer fish icon.

If you do not have an account, you can create a shortlink by pasting your link in the top right corner of the bitly homepage, or by visiting https://bitly.com/shorten/
